About Hangman App

A modern take on the classic word guessing game, built for iPhone.

What Hangman App is

Hangman App is a native iPhone game that reimagines the pen-and-paper classic most of us learned as kids. You guess letters, chase words, and watch the stickman fill in — but with curated word packs, five languages, private boards for friends and family, and global leaderboards to keep you coming back.

It's free to download and designed to be played anywhere: a five-minute break, a long train ride, or a family evening on the sofa. There are no adverts inside gameplay, no pop-ups, and no dark patterns.

Why we built it

Hangman is one of the most-played word games in the world, but almost every version online is the same: a low-effort webpage cluttered with adverts, recycled word lists, and no reason to come back tomorrow. We wanted to build the version we'd actually want on our home screen — one that respects your time, plays beautifully on iPhone, and has enough depth (word packs, languages, leaderboards, private boards) to stay interesting past the first session.

We also wanted to keep the game itself honest. No pay-to-win, no forced adverts between rounds, no manipulative streak mechanics. Just a well-made word game.

How it works

Every round gives you a hidden word from a themed pack. Guess letters one at a time; each wrong letter draws another line of the hangman. Solve before the drawing is complete and you score points, streaks, and (if you opt in) a spot on the global leaderboard. See the full how-to-play guide for the details, or browse the feature list.

Who it's for

  • Casual players who want a well-made version of a game they already love.
  • Families who want a shared pastime on the sofa or on a road trip.
  • Language learners practising vocabulary in five languages.
  • Teachers and tutors using the classroom-friendly private boards.

Who makes it

Hangman App is built and maintained by HANGMAN APP, an independent studio based at Unit 4.07, The Tea Building, 56 Shoreditch High Street, London E1 6JJ, United Kingdom.
